Multiple arrested for illegal mining at illegal mining sites in New Canada and Jerusalem informal settlement

IllegalMining intervention disruptive operations in Florida policing precinct on 22 and 23 August 2023, has resulted in the arrest of 15 suspects. These suspects were arrested in the vicinity of illegal mining sites in New Canada and Jerusalem informal settlement.

The suspects include nine undocumented persons, seven for possession of drugs (crystal meth) and one for possession of suspected stolen property. During the operations the police managed to seize illegal mining equipment such as pendukas, generators as well as gold bearing sand and explosives.

Illegal mining interventions will continue in the province until illegal mining has been stabilised.
