Mustadafin extends a helping hand for those affected by the Taxi strike

While most of us are breathing a sigh of relief following the end of the recent taxi strike, there are many citizens that are battling to recover from the financial loss as a result of not being able to work for many days. Responding to the taxi strike, the Mustadafin Foundation has been providing essential food items and warm meals to those affected. These food resources have been made available at local community centres in Khayelitsha, Delft and Manenburg.

“As the taxi strike started, we immediately noticed a sudden demand for support with essential goods,” says Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, director at Mustadafin. “Many people from low-income communities are reliant on regular wages to be able to put food on the table. With many businesses forced to close due to safety concerns, thousands of people were left without the financial means to support their families during this time.”

The recent taxi strike thankfully came to an end on Thursday, 10 August 2023, however the extent of the impact can still be felt, especially in low-income communities such as Khayelitsha, Delft and Manenburg. “We will continue to work with these affected communities; however, our resources are limited, therefore we are calling on the public and organisations to please donate essential items or financially support our work,” urges Johnstone-Cassiem.
