Northern Cape police prepares for Provincial Launch of Operation Shanela

The SAPS in the Northern Cape is currently preparing for the Provincial Launch of Operation Shanela at the Marino Stadium in De Aar on 15 August 2023.

Preceding the launch, the SAPS in conjunction with the Department of Transport Safety and Liaison, SANDF, Correctional Services, Department of Home Affairs, Community Police Forums, the Community in Blue Patrollers, SAPS Women’s Network and Men for Change are busy with build-up programmes in the Pixley Ka Seme district and continues to bring more boots on the ground throughout the province.

The multi-disciplinary high density operation which commenced on Thursday, 10 August 2023 until Sunday, 13 August 2023 with emphasis on the reduction of contact and violent crimes and property related crimes in hotspots areas.

The operations included several roadblocks vehicle check points (VCP’s) stop and searches, foot and blue light vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and dangerous weapons and tracing of wanted suspects.

The operational teams across the province in total searched 3666 vehicles and 8385 persons were stopped and searched and also executed 2656 high visibility patrols

3540 compliance inspections and random visits to liquor premises, second-hand dealers, scrap metal dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms as well as mines were conducted.

In total 422 suspects were arrested for an array of crimes including contravening the Firearms Control Act, possession of dangerous weapons, attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary, theft out of motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, malicious damage to property, dealing and possession of drugs as well as illegal dealing in liquor.

125 Wanted suspects were traced and arrested by detective teams in all five districts namely Frances Baard, John Taolo Gaetsewe, Pixley Ka Seme, ZF Mgcawu and Namakwa districts.

Numerous seizures including dagga, copper cables, alcohol and homemade brew, numerous dangerous weapons and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime were made.

Outstanding successes over the weekend was achieved by the Springbok Public Order Policing and Highway Patrol when they apprehended and arrested four male suspects who allegedly robbed a house in Kleinsee. Police retrieved an undisclosed amount of money, one 9mm pistol, two imitation pistols and live rounds of ammunition after arresting the suspects near Steinkopf.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt General Koliswa Otola appreciated all the efforts of the SAPS members, the external roleplayers and the community policing structures for their unabated efforts in fighting crime collectively and ensuring that our communities are and feel safe.
