A woman Doctor is dedicating her 50th Birthday as a Champion of Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR).

This, to honour a family member who died on Table Mountain.

Kim Williams, 48, had summited Table Mountain more than 1 000 times. But on February 27, 2021, he slipped on Kloof Corner Ridge, and fell to his death.

A WSAR training team were on a final ascent near the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, and sped to the site of his fall when the call-out was made (see accompanying photographs).

Now, Dr Nicole Evans is dedicating her 50th Birthday by serving WSAR as a “Champion” – by launching a mini-campaign to support WSAR.

WSAR has a permanent fundraising effort on the platform BackaBuddy, and Dr Evans has dedicated her physical challenge to WSAR, as the formal beneficiary.

Dr Evans plans to walk 50km on Saturday, August 26, in her home town of Somerset West. With every 5km lap, she invites walkers to join her and donate R50.

Dr Evans said: “WSAR volunteers are saints. Their extraordinary efforts, across multiple rescue disciplines, are such a gift to the outdoor lovers of the Western Cape. WSAR deserves all our support.

“My walk is a simple gesture to help, in my small way.”

Members of the public who wish to support Dr Evans can pledge any amount of money through this link:
