Five (5) suspects, aged between 14 and 34 are expected to appear before the Delmas Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 12 September 2023 afternoon they were arrested for Damaging of Essential Infrastructure and contravening the immigrations act.
It is alleged that on Sunday, 10 September 2023 at about 14:00, Members of the Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation based in Middelburg were contacted by Transnet with information regarding a group of suspects who were planning to steal Transnet overhead cables in Delmas.
The team comprising of the Hawks, Transnet investigators, Local Criminal Record Center and Amahlo Solution conducted an intelligent driven disruptive operation. During the operation five foreign nationals were found busy cutting the Transnet overhead cables.
Suspects were arrested and the exhibits which includes overhead cable to the value of R3 Million, Bolt cutter and Isuzu Bakkie to the value of R150 000.00 were seized for further Investigation.
