The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is determined to fight the scourge of illegal mining in Limpopo Province.
On 20 October 2023, Limpopo based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in collaboration with Limpopo Illegal Mining Task Team, State Security Agency, Home Affairs and Bokoni Mining Company conducted an illegal mining disruptive operation at Ga-Phasha in Sekhukhune area.
When illegal miners saw the team approaching, they ran away and disappeared. However, the team managed to seize 39 jack hammers, 9 generators, 2 water pumps, 4 shovels, 4 picks, 1 hand hoe to the value of over R600 000-00.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo Province Major General Gopz Govender has issued a stern warning against illegal miners that more disruptive operations will persistently be conducted. “If we don’t find illegal miners, we will continue crippling their operations by seizing their valuable mining equipment until they are left with nothing”, Major General Govender concluded.
