It is the month held in high regard at MasterDrive and by all road safety pundits. October in South Africa is Transport Month where all matters related to transport are placed into focus – in particular, road safety. As one of the greatest obstacles to a safe road system for all citizens, it is one of the most important aspects to concentrate on each Transport Month until we reach the low road fatalities that every country should have.
The CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says the company is hosting their annual Transport Month event for the seventh year. “During October, we select an important issue affecting road safety to focus on, especially as we head into the Festive Season. Transport Month is an ideal opportunity to kick off safety initiatives that can assist drivers going into a season of high road fatalities.
“The theme of the event is ‘Corporate accountability: driving safety in fleets.’ This includes a number of perspectives from professionals in a panel discussion entitled ‘Treading the influence‘. Leaders within the tyre industry will address the importance of proper tyre care at all times, but in particular, as one is about to embark on a long trip.”
MasterDrive highly anticipates this years’ Transport Month event, specifically ahead of the holiday period. “International estimates say that 35% of crashes where vehicle failure was the cause involved tyre-related incidents. As it was also a difficult economic year for many, the temptation to fit tyres that do not meet safety standards may be appealing to some drivers.
“The Transport Month event will bring awareness to these issues, along with others, which drivers should keep in mind as they head into a notoriously dangerous time on the roads. There can be no greater achievement this Transport Month than to motivate drivers to take road safety seriously.”
