Suspect in custody for police murder in Pietermaritzburg

The perseverance of the Pietermaritzburg based Hawks’ Serious Organised Investigation team to solve the murder of Constable Mxolisi Desmond Duma (28) led to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect in the early hours of Friday, 13 October 2023.

Constable Duma was shot and killed on 18 November 2021 while he was inside his friend’s vehicle on Church Street in Pietermaritzburg. The suspects also robbed him of his service firearm and fled the scene. The incident was reported to the police which incited the Hawks’ investigation.

During an exhaustive investigation, the suspect was identified and an operation was conducted. He was found at Snathing area where he was apprehended. He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court on 16 October 2023 facing charges of murder and armed robbery. The investigation to arrest further suspects and recover the stolen firearm is continuing.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona commended the team on the arrest. “We will ensure that the suspect is successfully prosecuted with maximum jail time,” said Major General Senona.
