An illicit mining operation was planned and conducted around Myakayaka village, Maake policing precinct in Mopani District on Thursday 09 November 2023 at about 09:00, resulting in the arrest of one suspect aged 18, for possession of suspected precious minerals and contravention of the Immigration Act.
The operation comprised of members of the Mopani District Illegal Mining Task Team, K9 Unit, and Limpopo Provincial Organized Crime Unit.
The suspect was found with one bag full of suspected minerals and he was arrested immediately.
The following equipment was confiscated: 12 pendukas, 6 mottos, 2 spades, 2 bags of suspected precious metals, 1 pick, 1 folk hammer, 1 shovel, 1 byl, 1 baby grinder, 1 folk hammer, and 2 torches.
The suspect will appear before Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 November 2023 on charges of possession of suspected precious minerals and contravention of the Immigration Act.
Police investigations are still continuing.
