Operation Shanela impacts the Amathole District

Operation Shanela which is running parallel to the festive season operations is making its presence felt in the Amathole district as all police stations are clamping down on criminal activities.

The intensified Festive Season operations are yielding positive results with the confiscation of at least two unlicensed firearms and ammunition today, 23 December 2023.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Xolile Nqatha visited a roadblock at Kei Bridge on the N2 today, 23 December 2023 which was supervised by District Commissioner, Major General Ngangema Xakavu. One driver was arrested for drunken driving and traffic fines to the value of R42 600.00 were issued in terms of National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

Foot patrols and stop and searches in the hotspot areas resulted in the arrest of more than thirty suspects aged between 20 and 58 years for crimes ranging from house robbery, common robbery, theft, possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, dealing in liquor without license, common assault and theft. Dangerous weapons such as knives etc and drugs (mandrax,Tik,dagga) and two unlicensed firearms were confiscated during patrols. The assistance of the Mounted Unit deployed at Willowvale contributed to enhanced visibility as part of the proactive crime prevention initiatives.

The arrested suspects will appear in their respective magistrate courts on Wednesday, 27 December 2023.

Amathole District Commissioner Major General Ngangema Xakavu extended his appreciation to all the men and women in blue for their dedication and efforts in ensuring that all citizens enjoy a safe and crime free festive season. He assured the communities that police visibility will be heightened during this period in order to squeeze the space of criminals.
