Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela results in the arrest of 877 suspects

As part of prioritising the safety and security of the residents, South African Police Service (SAPS) members in the Province working together with other law enforcement agencies and the community, arrested 877 suspects between 11 and 17 December 2023, through Operation Safer Festive Season Shanela.

The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from rape, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and common, murder, car hijacking, robbery aggravating, burglary residential and business, drug related offences, dealing in liquor, driving under the influence of alcohol to unlawful possession of firearms, among others.

The operations resulted in the confiscations of 25 cellular phones, 14 firearms, six ammunition, four vehicles, three dangerous weapons, a variety of drugs, precious metals, and 642 packets of tobacco. In addition, 70 suspected undocumented persons were handed over to the Department of Home Affairs for further processing.

A total of 110 premises, 2 601 persons and 3 806 vehicles were searched. 5 Tracking operations were conducted by Detectives to trace wanted suspects. Additionally, 18 roadblocks were held.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lt Gen Sello Kwena, thanked all stakeholders for their cooperation that culminated in the successes. He emphasised that it is only through strengthened partnerships and integrated approach between the public, law enforcement agencies and other government departments that a safe and secure environment can be realised during this period and beyond.
