Two suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of drugs in Guguletu

Members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint early this morning Tuesday, 05 December 2023 about a suspicious vehicle that was parked in front of a house in Guguletu. It was alleged that the person who drove the vehicle was suspected to be in possession of a firearm. The members immediately operationalised the information which led them to an address where they found the vehicle with no occupants inside.

The members also accosted two men at an informal room in the back of the yard where the vehicle was parked. The two suspects were searched and one of them was found in possession of a firearm. During the search, the members also discovered crushed mix tablet in possession of one of the suspects.

The two suspects aged between 34 and 36 were arrested and detained at Guguletu SAPS on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of drugs.

In an unrelated incident on Monday 04 December 2023 members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint of a business robbery in Manenberg area. It was alleged that three suspects robbed a business. While trying to flee the scene, members of the community gave chase on foot and apprehended them. It was witnessed that one of the suspects tossed something away, later discovered to be a 9 mm pistol of which the serial number was removed.

The firearm was seized. One of the suspects was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel, probably due to injuries sustained after he was assaulted by members of the community. Cases of business robbery, possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen property were registered for investigation. Two suspects were arrested on the mentioned charges

Additional cases of murder and attempted murder were also registered for investigation following the alleged assault of the suspects by the community members.

Furthermore, members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint on Monday 04 December 2023 in Blackheath Industrial area where a person put in diesel using fraudulent bank cards on three consecutive occasions. Diesel to the value of about R 3500-00 was put in yesterday. A 40-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Mfuleni SAPS on a case of fraud.

The arrested suspects are due to appear in the Athlone and Blue Downs Magistrates’ court’s on Wednesday 06 December 2023 on their respective charges.
