A Warrant Officer attached to the SAPS Verulam Detective Branch was attacked and robbed.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received two calls for assistance of the robbery in progress and upon arrival found the Policeman with bodily & facial injuries.
When interviewed, the Detective informed Reaction Officers that he was walking in an arcade on Wick Street in the Verulam Central Business District when two men attacked him.
The suspects choked the Policeman and robbed him of his Nokia mobile phone.
They then assaulted him and fled. The victim then drew his firearm and pursued the suspect.
He fired two warning shots during the foot chase that ended at Gandhi Park in the vicinity of the Verulam Magistrates Court.
He abandoned his chase due to injuries he suffered during the attack.
The Policeman then stopped a passerby, requested that use of his mobile phone & contacted the Reaction Unit SA Operations Center for immediate assistance.
Reaction Officer arrived on scene and conducted an extensive search for both suspects with negative results.
