172 Motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is deeply concerned about the number of motorists who are continuously arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 172 individuals were apprehended for endangering the lives of themselves and other road users by driving while intoxicated between the 12th and the 18th of February 2024 in operations conducted throughout the City of Johannesburg.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence that not only puts the driver at risk but also endangers the lives of innocent people on the road. The consequences of drunk driving can be deadly, leading to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.

We urge all motorists to act responsibly and never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. There are plenty of alternative options available, such as using public transportation, using e-hailing services, or designating a sober driver.

The JMPD will continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving and will not hesitate to arrest those who choose to break the law. Let us all work together to make our roads safer for everyone.
