Four alleged card scammers nabbed during roadblock in Flagstaff

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested four male suspects for their alleged involvement in card scamming during a roadblock on R61 few kilometres outside Flagstaff on Friday, 23 February 2024.

It is alleged that on the above-mentioned date at about 16:00, police were manning a roadblock on R61 outside Flagstaff, when they received information about a black Toyota Yaris with four occupants, who allegedly scammed two victims, one in Mt Fletcher, and another in Flagstaff. Moments later, police spotted the vehicle fitting the description and pulled it off the road.

On searching the vehicle, police found several bank cards, R4 730-00 cash and a speed point machine. The four men were nabbed for possession of suspected stolen property after failing to account for the seized items.

The vehicle was confiscated for further investigation, following some discrepancies on the vehicle, such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which was filed off, and false registration number plates.

All four suspects aged between 25 and 40 years old are expected to appear in the Flagstaff magistrate’s court on Monday, 26 February 2024, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property. There is a possibility of additional charges at the later stage of the investigation.

Major General Phumzile Cetyana commended members for the arrest, and further said “Our team of seasoned detectives are going to work throughout this weekend to profile the four men, and also look at the possibility of linking them to other similar crimes in the province or in other provinces”, added Maj Gen Cetyana.
