Ekurhuleni Metro Police warns against bogus police

There is a rise in recent incidents of suspects, taking advantage of the vulnerable victims wearing police uniform and using blue lights, to hijack/rob unsuspecting victims.

Motorists are warned that, these criminals pose as police Officers by using police equipment and blue lights fitted, on their vehicles Some demand cash, taking your belongings and motor vehicle.

We want to make it clear that no police should demand any cash deposit from anyone.

If motorists suspect of being stopped by “bogus police”, they shouldn’t stop if they suspect. They should drive to the nearest filling station, police station when stopped by an unmarked vehicle.

Motorists are advised not to stop at any deserted spots, even if is to relieve themselves and to always demand an appointment card/certificate of the Officer, with their rank, appointment date, picture of them and infrastructure or personnel number.

As the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), we further want to reiterate that, wearing of police uniform by a person to impersonate a Police official, who is not a member is an offence.

We appeal to communities to work together with the police, to report any suspicious activities, so that we could bring these perpetrators to book and stop these criminal activities.
