Three suspects nabbed, unlicensed firearm recovered in Groutville

KwaDukuza SAPS Crime Prevention successfully nabbed three suspects and recovered an unlicensed Taurus Pistol, a Rifle and live ammunition after swiftly reacted to information received about a discharging of a firearm in the Hangoes area at Groutville on Tuesday 19 March 2024 at about 01:45.

The team received the complaint from a member of the community about discharging of firearms, and patrolled the area, they spotted a suspicious vehicle and immediately stopped the driver of the vehicle who was intoxicated, along with the two passengers. The suspects and the vehicle were searched and the following items were recovered: a 9mm Taurus Pistol, 10 x 9mm live ammunition, a 5.56mm Taurus Rifle, 19 x .223 REM live ammunition.

The three suspects were arrested and charged for the following: the first suspect was charged for drunken driving, Possession of an unlicensed firearm, Unlawful possession of live ammunition and discharging a firearm in public, the second suspect was charged for Possession of firearm whilst suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and discharging of a firearm, and the third suspect was charged for being in unlawful possession of live of ammunition and discharging of a firearm.

The suspects will appear in KwaDukuza Magistrate Court on Wednesday 20 March 2024.

ILembe District Commissioner, Major General Anthony Gopaul applauded members of the SAPS KwaDukuza Crime Prevention on their swift action in recovering the firearms, and apprehension of the suspects who were also under the influence of alcohol. He said that this highlights the seriousness nature of the situation and the potential harm that could have been caused.

“Such proactive policing action are essential in preventing crime and ensuring the safety of our residents. I urge community to continue to work closely with the police and report any suspicious activities promptly” said Major General Gopaul.
