Elderly person targeted by a scammer in Verulam

An indian male identifying himself as a long lost family member to shoppers in the Verulam CBD in Kwazulu Natal is scamming the elderly of cash.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) interviewed two pensioners this week who were both scammed by a male. His modus operandi is to approach the elderly and identify himself a family member. He convinces the victim that he knows their late parents, children and siblings.

During the conversation the perpetrator requests to borrow a few hundred Rand explaining that his wife is delayed at the bank & he needs to pay a store closing for lunch.

Both victims said they could not understand how they handed him the money and had little recollection of the transaction. The man then disappears.

The lone suspect is an Indian male, slightly overweight and possibly using a gold cap on his tooth. He is driving a white motor vehicle.

The public is warned to be on high alert.
