KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka today launched a multi-million Rand contract for the upgrade of Main Road P258 in Ward 16 under Abaqulusi Local Municipality.
Main Road P258 serves a large population providing access to numerous developed residential settlements on both sides.
In addition, the road provides access to eight schools, various health facilities and places of worship.
P258 is also an important feeder road to the P54, P199 and P463, which serves as an important link between the towns of Vryheid and Nquthu.
The total length of P258 is 32.394 kilometres, the section under consideration is between kilometres 13+367 to km 32.394 (19.027 kilometres).
The total cost of the project is estimated to be R659 million. More than 290 employment opportunities are expected to be created with emerging local contractors set to benefit from the project.
MEC Hlomuka was joined by the Local House of Traditional Leadership, Inkosi uMdlalose and uNdunankulu, local ward councillor, Cllr. F. Khumalo, stakeholders and senior officials.
