KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport launched road upgrades in the uMhlathuze Local Municipality

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka today officially launched the zonal contractor for the upgrade, betterment and regravelling of various roads transversing through numerous wards under uMhlathuze Local Municipality.

The zonal contract entails the betterment and re-gravelling of main and district roads transversing through more than 15 wards under Umhlathuze Local Municipality. It also includes drain clearing, verge maintenance, blading, blacktop patching, road marking and road studs, guardrail installation and the construction of a taxi bay.
The re-gravelling and betterment of these roads will provide easy access to various schools, clinics, hospitals, Empangeni and Richards CBD.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be R89 million and will create approximately 165 employment opportunities for the entire contract period of 36 months. Companies owned by women, youth and people living with disabilities are set to also benefit from this contract.

MEC Hlomuka then unveiled the contractor and engaged the community and ward councillors at Ehholo Lamakhosi in ward 28, Umhlathuze Local Municipality.
