The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has taken significant action to ensure the safety of all road users in the city following a series of operations conducted from the 22nd to the 28th of July, 2024. During this period, a total of 77 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, highlighting our ongoing commitment to combating intoxicated driving.
In an additional enforcement effort, the JMPD High-Speed Unit arrested 47 motorists for exceeding the speed limit from the 26th to the 28th of July 2024. The highest speed recorded involved a grey Toyota Urban Cruiser driven by a 31-year-old male, who was apprehended for travelling at a staggering 132 km/h in a 60 km/h zone at Chris Hani Road and Collinder Road, Diepkloof, Soweto. This reckless disregard for speed limits not only endangers the driver’s life but also jeopardizes the safety of every individual on the road.
All arrested motorists were detained at various police stations across Johannesburg, where they will face the legal consequences of their actions.
The JMPD urges all motorists to recognize the severe dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol and excessive speeding. These behaviours not only put the drivers at risk but also compromise the safety of other innocent road users. The consequences of impaired driving can be catastrophic, leading to serious injuries and fatalities. Similarly, excessive speeding can result in devastating collisions that can have life-altering impacts.
The JMPD is committed to promoting road safety and will continue to implement rigorous enforcement measures to ensure that all road users adhere to the law. We remind the community that road safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can work towards a safer Johannesburg.
Motorists are encouraged to be responsible and make choices that prioritize the safety of themselves and others. If consuming alcohol, please opt for alternative transportation options. Speed limits are in place for a reason-observe them to protect lives.
