JMPD arrests 165 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is deeply concerned about the alarming number of incidents involving motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, which poses a significant threat to public safety.

From 19th August 2024 to 25th August 2024, JMPD officers arrested a total of 165 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. This not only endangers the lives of those behind the wheel but also places countless innocent road users at risk.

Driving under the influence of alcohol impairs judgment, reduces reaction times, and significantly increases the likelihood of accidents. In a city as vibrant and dynamic as Johannesburg, where our roads are bustling with vehicles and pedestrians, the consequences of drunk driving can be catastrophic.

We cannot afford to overlook the potential for devastating injuries and loss of life that come with such reckless behaviour.

The JMPD remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users. With a zero-tolerance approach towards drunk driving, the department will continue to conduct regular patrols and roadblocks to deter impaired driving. We urge all motorists to take personal responsibility and make safe choices when consuming alcohol.

There are numerous alternatives available to ensure that you arrive safely at your destination, including designated drivers, taxis, and e-hailing services.

As we continue our efforts to combat drunk driving, we encourage the community to join us in this initiative. Together, we can make Johannesburg’s roads safer for everyone.

Let us be clear: driving under the influence will not be tolerated, and the JMPD will take decisive action against offenders.
