Two male suspects were arrested by officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit for possession of a dangerous weapon, pointing with a firearm, evading and resisting arrest, failing to obey a lawful police instruction, reckless and negligent driving, inconsiderate driving and intimidation in Alexandra.
On Monday, 12 August 2024 officers received a complaint regarding a group of individuals driving a white Toyota Hiace who were reportedly threatening the community at the container houses in Alexandra, located at 4th and 8th Street.
Officers were dispatched to the location and upon arrival, they observed the vehicle leaving the premises. The community pointed out the vehicle belonging to the suspects. As the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the drivers refused to comply and attempted to ram the officers. A high-speed chase ensued, during which the suspects pointed a firearm at the officers from the passenger door.
In an attempt to stop the vehicle heading deeper into Alexandra, the officers fired at the suspects’ vehicle. Eventually, the officers managed to shoot out the vehicle’s tyres, bringing it to a standstill. The suspects attempted to escape on foot, but the officers acted swiftly and apprehended them. A search of the vehicle revealed a black firearm.
The duo was arrested and detained at Alexandra SAPS on various charges. The vehicle used in the commission of a crime was seized and booked in at the SAPS Aeroton vehicle pound.
It was further discovered that these suspects had been terrorizing the Alexandra community with firearms daily.
The JMPD remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We will continue to work tirelessly to maintain law and order in our communities.
