Members of Mqanduli stock theft unit embarked on a stocktheft operation from Wednesday, 31 July 2024 until yesterday 02 August 2024 on different areas within OR Tambo District with the aim of recovering stolen stock, arresting suspects and bring recovered stock to rightful owners.
The operation started at Bityi, where nine (9) suspected stolen cattle were recovered with four (4) positively identified as having been stolen in Mqanduli. As members were still busy, they received information about stolen cattle driven by men on horsebacks from Bityi to Ngcobo and quickly rushed to the identified area and on arrival, the suspects ran away leaving thirteen (13) cattle behind. All the recovered cattle were registered at Dalasile police station and transported to Mthatha SPCA pound.
Another team went to other villages under Bityi and Mqanduli policing precints and recovered fifty (56) sheep on different areas. On investigation Police found out that the suspect had left for Cape Town and police investigation is ongoing. In another village, they recovered fifteen (15)cattle and fourteen (14) goats and were all impounded at Mthatha SPCA stock pound. One Bonsmara breed heifer was positively identified as stolen in Elliot
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Pumzile Cetyana commended stock theft unit members and all involved in the operation for their determination to fight stock theft in the district. He further encouraged the members of the community to brand their stock to be easily identified when police recovered some stolen stock.
