Over the recent weeks numerous residents of Verulam have been making reports of cable theft to private security companies and law enforcement agencies. A tip off was received earlier this week that a local scrapyard dealer who is a pastor is involved in the syndicate.
Members of the infrastructure task team monitored a residential property situated on Oakland’s Drive earlier this morning, upon inspection numerous exhibits identified as municipal copper cable were found packed in the garage.
The suspect has been charged and detained at Verulam SAPS.
CPF and Neighbourhood watch groups noted that the owner often operates at all times of the day and night purchasing items from vigrants. The residents of Oakland’s now wish to draw up a petition to have the owners license revoked as this is not the first time he or his employees have purchased stolen items and have been arrested.
Residents say he is contributing to the already high crime rate experienced in the area. Business owners have also shared their frustrations stating that the Pastors scrap yard was amongst the first places to search when items went missing and often located the items in his yard.
