The Provincial Commissioner wants to congratulate members for their exceptional and swift action in dismantling a dangerous hitchhiking syndicate operating in the Free State.
On the night of 21 November 2024, members of the Kroonstad Highway Patrol conducted a focused operation at known hitchhiking spots in the region, following reports of individuals being overpowered by criminals posing as hitchhikers. Valuable information was gathered from other suspects previously arrested and operationalised. As part of their proactive approach, the members observed a suspect entering a vehicle, prompting immediate surveillance.
Upon stopping the vehicle and questioning the hitchhiker, crucial information was obtained and members acted swiftly. They called for backup from the Trio Crime Task Team and deployed an unmarked police vehicle. The hitchhiker was placed in the vehicle with police officers and they proceeded towards Orange Farm. At an identified spot, they stopped and a group of armed men tried to ambush the officers, resulting in a violent shootout. One suspect aged 24 was shot and killed during the exchange of fire, while other suspects managed to flee the scene.
While processing the scene, the kingpin contacted the hitchhiker again and the swift reaction of the members resulted in the arrest of the kingpin. The officers, assisted by various units and private security companies, followed up on more information and five other suspects were arrested.
To date, the operation has resulted in the arrest of seven suspects. Investigations are ongoing. Police confiscated four firearms and a pellet gun.
The Provincial Commissioner in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commends the courage, innovation, and dedication of the Kroonstad Highway Patrol and Fezile Dabi Trio Crime Unit members, as well as other stakeholders involved who worked tirelessly to dismantle this syndicate. “Their teamwork, swift response, and tactical execution of the operation have not only led to multiple arrests but have also dealt a significant blow to criminal activities in the region,” said Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
