A manhunt has been launched following a cash in transit heist that occurred on Saturday morning, 30 November 2024. It is alleged that a silver Mercedes Benz vehicle rammed onto a Security cash in transit van with three security officers inside, thus forcing it to stop. The incident occurred along the R510 road at Sandfontein village near Mogwase outside Rustenburg.
According to information, the balaclava wearing suspects fired shots at the escort bakkie and also forced it to stop. All security officers were forced out of their vehicles at gunpoint and robbed of their firearms that included three rifles and four hand guns. An unconfirmed number of suspects used explosives to blow up the cash van and took an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects then set alight their Mercedes Benz and the cash van before fleeing from the scene driving in several vehicles that included a white Volkswagen Polo, a white Toyota Fortuner, a white Toyota Hilux double cab and a blue Ford Ranger double cab.
The injured crew member from the escort vehicle was taken to hospital. It is not clear at this stage what caused his injuries. The suspects are unknown and no arrest has been effected.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) is investigating.
