– A 55-year-old male suspect was apprehended by the members of the Provincial Anti-Smuggling Team in connection with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle on Wednesday, 11 December 2024.
Police received information about a silver 4×4 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV that was alleged to be stolen from Gauteng province and heading towards Musina policing area under Vhembe District. An immediate search for the motor vehicle was activated and subsequently spotted traveling along the N1 South highway outside Polokwane.
The team managed to intercept the Jeep Grand Cherokee with one male occupant next to Shell Ultra City filling station. Afterwards, police started with the inspection of the motor vehicle and discovered that chassis and engine numbers have been tempered with.
A 55-year-old male driver was asked about the origin of the motor vehicle but failed to provide a satisfactory response and was immediately placed under arrest on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
The silver Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV worth R500 000-00 was also seized during the arrest and further investigations will be conducted to determine its origin.
The suspect will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate Court on Friday, 13 December 2024 facing a charge of Contravention of Section 68(6) of National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle.
Police investigations are continuing.
