The police have achieved a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the murder of an 87-year-old woman in Phahameng, Bultfontein, thanks to critical information provided by the community.
On Friday, 10 January 2025, members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit followed up on leads regarding the murder case of Mrs Elsie Mutsi. Their investigation led them to a house in Naledi Section, where they located and arrested a 20-year-old suspect at his girlfriend’s residence. During the interrogation, officers noticed bloodstains on one of his shoes. After extensive interrogation and following up on information he has been charged with murder.
On Saturday, 4 January 2025, at about 10:55 police were summoned to a murder scene in Phahameng, Bultfontein. On arrival, they discovered Mutsi lying in the outside toilet in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds on her back and neck. She was declared dead on the scene.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, praised the collaboration between the community and the police, emphasizing that this breakthrough would not have been possible without the courageous individuals who came forward with information. “The dedication of the community and police in fighting crime is evident in this case. Together, we are making our neighborhoods safer,” said Lt Gen Motswenyane.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
