Known suspect targets businessman in Durban

A Transport Company owner has made contact with Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) seeking assistance after he suffered losses totalling over R1 Million in thirty (30) cases of Theft within a period of twelve (12) months in 2024.

The complainant informed Reaction Officers that the suspect was the son of a Colonel in the South African Police Services (SAPS) and therefore he was having difficulty in having the suspect arrested despite several criminal cases
being registered at various Police Stations in Ethekweni – KZN.

According to the Businessman, he has truck yards in Coniston, Phoenix & Mt Moreland in Kwazulu Natal. The suspect is a 22 year old mechanic who has previously worked for the company. When the mechanic was dismissed for Theft, he was seen on several occasions stealing tyres, harnesses, fuel, tools, computer boxes & parts from trucks at different yards. The theft disabled trucks & stopped operations for days. Several criminal cases were registered and witness statements were obtained identifying the suspect. A tow truck operator is believed to be buying the items for resale.

The complainant added that the suspect was only arrested once & the case was closed within days. The businessman added that the Investigating Officer was pointed out the suspect at his home in Trenance Park – KZN but the Police in
attendance was verbally abused by the Colonel preventing the arrest of his son.

It is believed that the suspect is feeding his drug habit with proceeds from the sale of the stolen items.
