Swift police action has led to the arrest of a Grade 11 learner found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, preventing a potential threat to school safety.
Majola police, acting on reliable information, visited the 20-year-old rental residence in Ngxongweni locality, Luthengele A/A, on the evening of Tuesday, 04 March 2025. A search of his room resulted in the recovery of a 9mm pistol, with an intact serial number but no ammunition. The learner, originally from Swazini locality, was immediately arrested.
Police are now investigating how the learner came into possession of the firearm and working to establish its lawful owner. The suspect is expected to appear before the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 06 March 2025, facing charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.
OR Tambo Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, commended the police for their swift response. “The removal of this firearm from the school environment ensures the safety of learners and educators. We cannot allow weapons in schools, as they create fear and instability in the teaching and learning space,” he said.
