Police members apprehend four suspects on charges of vehicle theft

An integrated operation by the Maitland Flying Squad in collaboration with Provincial Traffic officials proved successful when they arrested four suspects and recovered three stolen motor vehicles.

In the early hours of this morning, Thursday 27 March 2025, members embarked on an integrated operation in the parking area of Tyger Valley shopping centre in Bellville where they spotted two suspicious vehicles. The two vehicles were blocked in before they could escape the parking area. The members searched the vehicles during which they found a jamming device and car breaking implements inside the vehicles. Thorough inspection of the vehicles revealed that the vehicles displayed false registration numbers. Three suspects aged between 37 and 51 were arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS for the possession of a stolen vehicles, possession of a jamming device and the possession of car breaking implements.

In a separate incident, members of Maitland Flying Squad assisted a tracking company following a hijacking of a vehicle in Kuils River on Wednesday afternoon. The vehicle was tracked at a Somalian shop in Khayelitsha area. The driver of the vehicle who went into the shop, ran out of shop and fled upon seeing police members approaching. The members gave chase on foot and arrested the suspect with an imitation firearm in his possession as well as a cellphone that was robbed from the owner of the shop. The 17-year-old suspect was detained at Khayelitsha SAPS on charges of possession of hijacked vehicle, possession of imitation firearm and business robbery.

The four suspects will appear in the Bellville and Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Courts once charged on the mentioned charges.
