The police in the Northern Cape continue to stamp the authority of the state during targeted crime prevention operations that resulted in the arrest of 240 perpetrators.
Easter Weekend Operations, under Operation Paseka, concluded on Friday, 25 April 2025.
However Operation Shanela will continue unabated to address priority crimes across all five districts in the province.
A multi-disciplinary approach that entailed high visibility patrols, stop and search actions, roadblocks and vehicle check points as well as the tracing of wanted suspects led to the arrests between Monday, 21 April 2025 until Sunday, 27 April 2025.
The teams inspected numerous liquor outlets for non-compliance to ensure perpetrators face the full might of the law, this led to the closure of 25 unlicensed establishments.
Through high visibility actions, vehicle and foot patrols and stop and search actions, 4,479 vehicles and 11,453 persons were stopped and searched at vehicle check points (VCP’s) and roadblocks conducted across the province.
Suspects were arrested for illegal dealing in liquor, burglary, dealing in drugs, and possession of drugs, attempted murder, rape and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, to mention a few.
Detectives also conducted tracing operations in search of wanted suspects who failed to make court appearances or for whom warrants of arrests were issued.
Compliance inspections were conducted at numerous second-hand dealers and liquor premises as well as formal and informal businesses, farms, scrapyards.
During the execution of the operations, police confiscated illicit tobacco products, dangerous weapons, alcoholic beverages, drugs and cash.
Various community engagements and outreach programmes were held in conjunction with community policing structures and government departments to address trending issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, especially amongst the youth as well as general safety.
The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Gayton McKenzie visited Upington, with the purpose of engaging with the community regarding the preservation of Khoisan culture and language.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga appreciated the collaboration between departments in conjunction with community structures in the execution of the operations and thanked the public for their continued efforts in the fight against crime.
