Two hundred and five suspects nabbed in Ekurhuleni district during Operation Shanela

The Efforts of the teams comprising SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, Wardens, Home Affairs , CPF and other stakeholders paid off once again in Ekurhuleni District. This comes after levels of crimes were reduced during Operations Shanela conducted in Ekurhuleni District Police stations from Wednesday, 23 April 2025 to Thursday morning, 24 April 2025.

(183) suspects were arrested by the Detectives across Ekurhuleni Policing Precincts during tracing operations Shanela that started on Wednesday 23 April 2025 evening to 24 April 2025 morning. Amongst others, (108) were arrested for contact crime, (14) for Contact related Crime, (6) for property related Crime, (37) for other serious crimes and (25) for Gender based Violence.

In parallel to the Detectives Operations, members of SAPS Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence also arrested 2 suspects for Possession of drugs wherein Crystal meth, Nyaope and Mandrax tablets were seized from the suspects

Ekurhuleni Deputy District Commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela further led the Operation Shanela on Thursday 24 April 2025 morning in Reigerpark area whereby 22 persons were nabbed for being illegal immigrants, 9 for possession of illicit cigarettes, 3 for dealing in liquor without license, 2 for possession of drugs, 1 suspect for pointing of firearm, 1 for intimidation and 5 Traffic fines issued to the motorists to the value of R2 500-00.

School searches were conducted in 2 Reigerpark’s secondary schools wherein 7 vapes were seized from the premises.

Brigadier Machakela also led community Imbizo in Ramaphosa Sports ground, Reigerpark where Community members managed to raise their concerns regarding Policing and crime in their area. Issues such as case withdrawals, mob justice, bullying at schools, a need for mobile Client service Centre and services rendered by police were amongst thorny issues discussed in the meeting.

Ekurhuleni Deputy District Commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela commended the persistent efforts of all the law enforcers in their pursuit of ridding crimes in the community.
