Location: R102 Between Palmview and Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal
KZN VIP responded to a distress call on the evening of 16 May 2025 regarding a pedestrian-vehicle crash along the R102 between the Palmview robots and the Phoenix offramp. On arrival, KZN VIP members secured the scene where a male pedestrian had tragically lost his life. The victim’s body lay on the busy roadway, prompting efforts to safeguard the area and prevent further harm.
Shortly after, distraught community members from Cornubia arrived, many visibly shaken and some armed with pangas and other objects. They reported that the victim, a local breadwinner, had been walking home from work with others when three unidentified African male suspects attempted to rob them.
In a desperate attempt to flee, the group ran across the roadway. Tragically, one of the victims was struck by an oncoming vehicle and killed.
The incident caused major traffic disruptions as the roadway was obstructed. KZN VIP Ambulance services, Metro Police, and SAPS attended the scene. SAPS is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding both the attempted robbery and the fatal collision.
Residents of Cornubia are now calling for immediate intervention from police and municipal authorities. They cite persistent issues such as overgrown bushes, lack of lighting, and regular attacks on workers commuting through the area conditions they say have created a daily environment of fear and danger.
Family members of the deceased remain in deep mourning, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss.
KZN VIP extends its sincere condolences to the family during this heartbreaking time. We remain committed to supporting the community and advocating for a safer environment for all.
