The driver of a white Toyota Hilux bakkie who fled the scene of a hit and run collision crashed into a Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Response Vehicle in Temple Valley – KZN this afternoon (Tuesday).
A motorist contacted the Operations Centre at approximately 17:43 requesting assistance after the driver of the bakkie rear ended his silver Hyundai i10 on Ireland Street in the Verulam CBD – KZN. The caller further stated that the driver of the bakkie initially stopped his vehicle, but sped off after he was questioned about his sobriety. The man followed the vehicle as it drove erratically through the Central Business District towards Temple Valley – KZN and contact RUSA for assistance.
Reaction Officers were dispatched to locate the bakkie. During the search, the intoxicated driver sped through a stop street and collided into a RUSA Toyota Fortuner. The intoxicated male once again attempted to drive off, but was boxed in by backup Officers.
It was established that the 32 year old male is employed as a Plumber at the Ethekwini Water & Sanitation Department. He stated that the vehicle he was driving belonged to the Municipality. He was placed under arrest and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation.
The Reaction Officer was not injured.
