Yesterday evening, the Mi7 Surveillance Net – a web of Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras spanning more than 120 locations in the Midlands – flagged a vehicle in the Hayfields area.
The vehicle, a white Mercedes, was loaded onto the Mi7 Surveillance Net after it was identified as a getaway car in a series of housebreaking incidents in the same area.
Mi7 Strategic Threat Response Unit members were immediately tasked, and led a team to find the vehicle. It was spotted on Cleland Road, and the driver immediately began to flee once Mi7 teams were spotted.
This resulted in a high-speed pursuit from Cleland Road, into Murray Road, and down the R103 into Ashburton. The driver became increasingly reckless as the pursuit continued and, as the chase entered residential suburbs in Ashburton, Mi7 teams opted to ease off slightly to avoid any potential harm to the community.
This unfortunately gave the suspects the seconds they needed to bring the vehicle to a halt near the Ashburton offramp to the N3. They fled the vehicle on foot.
A widespread search was conducted, but they could not be found. The vehicle was impounded by the police.
