On Thursday 08 May 2025 at 08:20, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Taxi Task Team in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, impounded six(6) minibus taxis for failing to meet the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act 93/1996 in the Crystal Park area.
Officers conducted operation Shanela with a stern focus on compliance of Minibus taxis throughout the City of Ekurhuleni. on New Modder and Unit Road. Officers managed to stop Toyota Quantum taxis and a Bolt vehicle on New Road, upon inspection, it was discovered the said vehicles were operating without permits and without operator cards, which fails to meet the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act of 93/1996. The vehicles were taken to Provincial Pound.
The EMPD appeals to taxi owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, while operating as public transport and scholar transport in the City of Ekurhuleni.
