In a operation involving SAPS Johannesburg K9 Unit, CAP Specialised Operations, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, and Tracker Connect, law enforcement officials acted on intelligence regarding a cellphone theft syndicate operating in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
According to information received, the suspects were using a Toyota Etios sedan to carry out thefts and were planning to target Kempton Park and Boksburg next. The same vehicle had been linked to previous incidents of cellphone snatching in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.
Operational teams were deployed to intercept the suspects. The targeted vehicle was spotted travelling at high speed toward Boksburg. Officers managed to bring the vehicle to a stop, and all three suspects were arrested as they attempted to flee the scene.
Upon searching the vehicle, officials discovered that it had been affixed with false registration plates. Multiple stolen cellphones were recovered.
