As large parts of the country experience freezing temperatures the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is urging all motorists to take extra care on the roads.
Dewald Ranft, MIWA National Chairman, says the current weather conditions can make driving extremely hazardous. “Snow and ice on roads in some areas, fallen trees, reduced visibility, and strong crosswinds can lead to a significant increase in accidents. We urge motorists to adapt their driving behaviour to suit these dangerous conditions.”
Key Safety Tips for Winter Driving
Ranft offers the following safety tips for motorists navigating the challenging winter weather:
- Slow Down: Drive at a reduced speed to allow for longer braking distances on slippery roads.
- Increase Following Distance: Allow plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front to give yourself time to react.
- Use Headlights: Keep headlights on low beam to improve visibility in mist, fog, and snow.
- Stay Alert for Fallen Trees or Debris: Be vigilant and prepared to stop or swerve safely if necessary.
- Avoid Sudden Movements: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly to avoid skidding.
- Keep Your Car Well Maintained: Ensure that your tyres, brakes, lights, and wipers are in good working order.
“In such extreme conditions, it’s often safer to postpone your journey if possible,” adds Ranft. “If you do need to drive, plan your route carefully, allow extra travel time, and make sure your mobile phone is fully charged in case of emergency.”
MIWA also recommends the following additional precautions:
- Check Weather and Traffic Updates: Before setting out, consult weather forecasts and traffic reports for your route. Avoid areas with severe weather warnings or road closures.
- Pack an Emergency Kit: Carry essential items such as a blanket, water, snacks, a torch, and a first aid kit in your vehicle. These can be invaluable if you become stranded.
- Keep Fuel Tanks Full: Try to keep your fuel tank at least half full to avoid running out in case of delays or detours.
- Clear Snow and Ice: Before driving, remove all snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, lights, and roof to ensure maximum visibility and prevent hazards for other road users.
MIWA encourages all drivers to exercise caution and patience on the roads. “By being prepared and driving responsibly, we can all do our part to reduce accidents and keep each other safe during this severe winter weather,” concludes Ranft.
