OR Tambo Police recovers three unlicensed firearms in Qumbu

As OR Tambo police continue intensifying their fight against the proliferation of illegal and unlicensed firearms, three unlicensed firearms were recovered in Qumbu on 11 June 2025. Three male suspects were apprehended after they were found in possession of the mentioned firearms at different times on this day.

The first incident in the Qumbu Central Business District, Tactical Response Team’s Recce members were following up on information about a male suspect having an unlicensed firearm. Upon sight, the suspect was searched and a 9mm Glock pistol (intact serial number) with eighteen live rounds was recovered. On firearm circulation, it transpired that the firearm belongs to a deceased person.

In an unrelated incident the OR Tambo District Task Team based in Mthatha recovered a .38 revolver (erased serial number) from a 33-year-old male suspect in/during a roadblock next to Sulenkama junction at about 11:30. The firearm had no ammunition in it.

As police continued with their stop and search operation, a 38-year-old male suspect was arrested at Mafusini locality for possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with sixteen (16) live rounds.

All arrested suspects will appear before Qumbu Magistrates Court soon, facing their respective charges ranging from unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm to unlawful possession of ammunition.
