Five African males aged between 26 and 53 were arrested, after they were found in possession of two carcasses when the vehicle they were traveling in was intercepted by police on the R30 road, near Welkom.
It is alleged that on Thursday, 26 June 2025, at approximately 04:45, Welkom Highway Patrol members received and followed information of possible stock theft. While on the R30 road police spotted a Silver Ford Ranger fitting the description that was provided traveling towards Welkom. Members attempted to stop the suspected vehicle near Bloudrift. It is alleged that the vehicle did not stop, and a chase ensued. During the chase, the vehicle in which the alleged suspects were traveling was ultimately stopped near Welkom. Upon searching the vehicle Police discovered two carcasses at the back of the Ford Ranger.
It is further alleged that the five occupants of the vehicle failed to account for being in possession of the two slaughtered cattle. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two cattle were allegedly stolen from a farm in Theunissen.
Five male suspects aged between 26 and 53 were subsequently arrested for stock theft. They will appear in the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 June 2025.
