The dedicated Vala Umgodi task team in Sekhukhune District has intensified its efforts to combat illegal mining activities, reaffirming its commitment to eradicating these unlawful practices.
On Tuesday, 3 June 2025, at approximately 09:30, during a routine patrol in Ga-Manyaka village, the team conducted a successful operation targeting an illegal mining site within an abandoned shaft. The operation resulted in the arrest of seven male suspects involved in the illicit extraction of suspected chrome minerals.
During the operation, police confiscated various mining tools and equipment, including two generators, a jackhammer with extension cords, a professional jackhammer, a round shovel, a spade, five chezels, a pickaxe, a wheelbarrow, a 2-pound hammer, and crowbars. The suspects are currently detained at Mecklenburg SAPS pending further investigation.
