230 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Johannesburg

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) continues its unwavering commitment to road safety within the city. Between Monday, 7th July 2025, and Sunday, 13th July 2025, JMPD officers arrested a total of 230 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol across various operations, roadblocks, and routine patrols in Johannesburg.

This surge in arrests highlights the JMPD’s proactive and robust approach to curbing dangerous driving behaviours that pose a severe threat to the lives of motorists, passengers, and pedestrians alike. The department continues to prioritise the removal of intoxicated drivers from the city’s roads as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce road fatalities and injuries.

JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca emphasised the critical importance of these operations: “The statistics from the past week are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge posed by drunk driving. Our officers continue to work tirelessly, day and night, to remove intoxicated drivers from our roads, thereby preventing potential tragedies. We commend their dedication and vigilance and will continue to implement a zero-tolerance approach to this dangerous and irresponsible behaviour.”

The JMPD will continue to conduct these intensified operations regularly to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and to foster a culture of responsible driving. Motorists are reminded that driving under the influence is not only a criminal offence but also a reckless act that endangers countless lives.
