Police arrested a suspected illegal miner after he was found with an unlicensed firearm and scores of ammunition

A man who is a Lesotho National, also suspected to be an illegal miner, was arrested in Angelo Informal Settlement, Ekurhuleni, after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and scores of ammunition on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

Information was received regarding suspects who were in possession of unlicensed firearms at Angelo Informal Settlement. The information was that the suspects’ are Lesotho Nationals.

On 29 July 2025, the National Intervention Unit (NIU), in conjunction with a team from Operation Vala Umgodi and other role players, operationalised the information and went on a lookout for the suspects.

One of the suspects was located and the police pounced on him. Upon searching him and his room, police found an unlicensed firearm and scores of ammunition. Preliminary investigation revealed that the firearm was reported stolen in Bloemfontein, Free State Province.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. More charges might be added pending the investigation. Police are on a lookout for other suspects.
