A truck was burnt during a protest on the N2 Freeway, Gqeberha

A group of about 60 protesters from the Wells Estate area took to the R335 (Addo Road) on 9 July 2025 and blocked the road with burning rubble and tyres. The motive was allegedly due to service delivery issues in terms of electrical boxes.

SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) responded to the scene and by 16:30 the road was opened and the rubble cleared from the road as the group dispersed.

However by 18:40 a larger group formed again (about 300 protesters) and took to the N2 Freeway as well as the Truckers Inn bridge, where the roads were blocked again in both directions with burning rubble and tyres. A Hino 4 tonne truck was also targeted and set alight (completely burnt) by the group.

POP once again intervened and by 20:30 the roads were opened again while the Nelson Mandela Bay Fire Department assisted to put out all the remaining fires and help clear the road surfaces.

A case of public violence and damaging of infrastructure was opened and it is being investigated by SAPS Swartkops. A 20-year-old male suspect has been arrested on the above charges.

POP will remain in the area to ensure public safety.
