The relentless efforts in combating illicit mining and related crimes have yielded significant results for the Vala Umgodi teams, with a massive take-down operation leading to the arrest of one hundred and sixty-nine (169) suspects in the Free State Province.
The suspects, comprising both South African and undocumented foreign nationals, were arrested for charges ranging from illegal mining to contravention of the Immigration Act.
The multidisciplinary operations forming part of the ongoing “Operation Vala Umgodi,” was executed between Monday, 21 July 2025 and 28 July 2025. The operation targeted several identified hotspots notorious for illegal mining activities across the province, including disused shafts and illegal processing sites.
This includes roadblocks, stop and searches, as well as intelligence led operations. The suspects, aged between 18 and 52 years old, face charges including illegal Mining, Contravention of the Immigration Act, Possession of Suspected Stolen Property, Contravention of the Mine Health and Safety Act and possession of illicit cigarettes.
During the intelligence-driven raids, police also seized a substantial amount of equipment used in illegal mining operations. This includes:
* Shovels and picks
* Phendukas (gold processing machines)
* Gas cylinders
* Various gold-bearing materials
All arrested suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate’s Courts in the Free State, facing the aforementioned charges. Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are not ruled out.
Vala Umgodi operation remains resolute in its mandate to ensure the safety and security of all citizens and to protect the country’s valuable mineral resources.
