A 12-year-old boy was critically injured after being run over on the northbound lane of the R102 near the Jabu Ngcobo Road intersection in Verulam – KZN today (Saturday).
Eyewitnesses reported that a grey VW Polo was travelling at an excessive speed and only came to a stop several metres away from the scene of the accident. The witness further reported that the impact was so severe that the minor was thrown several metres from the point of contact.
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received an urgent call at 13:24 requesting immediate medical assistance. RUSA Paramedics arrived to find the child with critical injuries.
The boy, along with three (3) friends, had been returning to their homes in Trenance Park – KZN after attending a Fun Run at a local school in Verulam – KZN when the accident occurred. They allegedly attempted to flee across the road giving the driver of the VW Polo limited time to respond.
The minor was stabilised before being expedited to a specialist medical facility for further treatment.
