On Wednesday, 06 August 2025, the Vala Umgodi task team, in collaboration with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), successfully executed a coordinated disruptive operation aimed at curbing #IllegalMining activities for precious minerals, specifically gold, in the Mopani District.
During the operation, a well-planned waylay was carried out at Tours Mountain, leading to the identification of four suspects engaged in unlawful mining activities. Tactics employed during the operation resulted in the arrest of one illegal miner and the confiscation of several illegal mining tools and equipment, including a shovel, two pickaxes, 5 litres of petrol, a panga, a bucket, a pair of water boots, generator, and a screwdriver.
This operation highlights our unwavering commitment to protecting our natural resources and combating illegal mining within the province. The South African Police Service remains dedicated to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, safeguard our environment, and ensure community safety.
We will continue to intensify our efforts against illegal mining activities and encourage community members to report any suspicious activities to assist us in maintaining law and order.
