On Monday 18 August 2025 at 14:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison Unit (CLU) Officers, in conjunction with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Infrastructure Unit Officers, discovered a drug lab in the Benoni area.
Following on information received about an illegal drug laboratory, Officers proceeded to a residence on fourth avenue. Upon arrival, the owner of the residence was found in the vicinity. Officers introduced themselves and proceeded to search the premises. With one of the outside rooms being locked, the owner was also requested to contact the tenant to come open one of the outside rooms, but the tenant refused to come.
Officers were able to gain access into the outside room and discovered a lab used to produce illicit substances, such as cat, rock (crack), crystal meth and mandrax. A scale, paraphernalia pipes, cell phones, laptops, money-counting machine and an undisclosed amount of cash, were found in the room.
The landlord’s statement was obtained and all the exhibits that were found, were booked at the Benoni Police Station. A case was filed, pending further investigations.
